About this policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Amali App (“Amali”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use the Amali mobile app for iOS and Android (Dua, Dhikr, Al-Qur'an & Tafsir, prayer times, Qibla direction and Amali Pro) and this website, amali.app.
Our principle: Amali only receives or uses information when you allow it. Anything that needs a device permission or your consent stays off until you agree, and you can change your mind at any time.
If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use Amali.
Permissions: you decide
Amali asks for a permission only when you use a feature that needs it, with a short explanation first. If you say no, the rest of the app keeps working. Depending on your device and the features you use, Amali may ask for:
| Permission | Why Amali asks | If you say no |
|---|---|---|
| Location (while using the app) | To calculate prayer times and the Qibla direction for where you are. | Prayer times and Qibla cannot be personalised to your location. Everything else works as normal. |
| Notifications | To remind you of prayer times and other reminders you switch on. | No reminders are shown. |
| Alarms & exact reminders (Android, Amali Pro) | To ring the dynamic night-prayer alarm at the right time. | The dynamic alarm cannot be scheduled. |
| Compass & motion sensors | To point the Qibla needle in the right direction. Readings are used live on your device and are not stored or sent anywhere. | The Qibla compass is unavailable. |
| Photos or storage (only if you save or share an image) | To save a greeting card or verse image you created, if you choose to. | You can still share through your device’s share sheet. |
| Advertising & tracking consent | To ask whether you want ads personalised to you (free version only). | You still see ads, but they are not personalised. Amali Pro removes ads. |
Amali does not ask for access to your contacts, microphone, camera, calendar, text messages, call logs or health data, and does not collect your location in the background.
To review or withdraw a permission: on iPhone, open Settings → Amali (and Settings → Privacy & Security). On Android, open Settings → Apps → Amali → Permissions. Withdrawing a permission takes effect immediately.
Information we handle
We keep this list short on purpose. Amali does not ask for your real name, phone number, home address or payment card details.
| Information | What it is and when it is used | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Only after you allow it. We keep no location history and we do not use it for advertising. | Prayer times and Qibla direction. |
| Account details (optional) | If you create an account: your email address, a display name if you add one, and a sign-in identifier. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never visible to us. | Signing in, resetting your password and restoring your content on a new device. |
| Content you save | Favourite Dua and Dhikr, personal collections, reading sessions and your display settings (translation language, font, theme). Kept on your device. If you are signed in, it may also be backed up to your account. | Showing your content, and restoring it if you change phone. |
| Purchases (Amali Pro) | Apple and Google process the payment. We receive confirmation that Pro is active (a purchase token or receipt and the product). We never see your card number. | Unlocking Amali Pro and restoring purchases. |
| Device and usage information | App version, device model, operating system version, language, which features are used, and crash or performance reports. Collected through Google’s analytics services. It is not used to identify you personally. | Fixing bugs, keeping Amali fast and understanding which features help most. |
| Advertising data (free version) | Google’s advertising services may process your advertising ID, IP address and basic device information to show and measure ads. Personalised ads are shown only if you consent. | Showing ads that keep Amali free. |
| Messages you send us | Your email address and whatever you write when you contact us. | Replying to you and handling requests. |
How we use information
- To provide the features you ask for: prayer times, Qibla, reminders, saved favourites and restoring purchases.
- To show ads in the free version, and to remove them when you have Amali Pro.
- To keep Amali working and secure: fixing crashes, preventing abuse and fraud.
- To understand, in aggregate, how features are used so we can improve them.
- To reply to your messages and carry out requests such as deleting your account.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell personal information, rent it, or trade it with data brokers. Using a faith-based app can reveal sensitive information about you, so we treat it with extra care: we do not build profiles from your use of Amali, and personalised advertising is never switched on without your consent.
Legal bases
Where laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022) apply, we process personal data on these bases:
- Consent, for location, notifications, personalised advertising and, where required, analytics. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Contract, to provide your account, your saved content and your Amali Pro purchase.
- Legitimate interests, for security, abuse prevention and fixing crashes, always balanced against your rights.
- Legal obligation, for example tax and accounting records.
Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Amali, under terms that limit them to doing so, and as described below. We never sell it.
| Provider | What for | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| App analytics and crash reports, this website’s hosting and analytics and, if you sign in, authentication and cloud backup. | ||
| Google (advertising services) | Ads in the free version of the app. | Google · How Google uses data from apps |
| Apple App Store | Payment and subscription handling for Amali Pro on iPhone. | Apple |
| Google Play | Payment and subscription handling for Amali Pro on Android. |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or in a merger or sale of the app (in which case this policy’s promises continue to apply, or we will tell you first). Otherwise we share information only with your consent.
Advertising and tracking
The free version of Amali shows ads from Google’s advertising services. Amali Pro removes all ads.
- Europe and the UK: before any personalised ads, we show a consent message. If you decline, ads are not personalised.
- iPhone: Amali shows Apple’s tracking prompt. If you tap “Ask App Not to Track”, Amali does not access your advertising identifier and ads are not personalised.
- Everywhere else: you can opt out of personalised ads in your device settings (see below).
Non-personalised ads can still be shown, and Google may still use limited data to deliver and measure them, limit how often an ad appears, and prevent fraud. We do not track you across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising, unless you allow it when asked.
Manage it any time: on Android, Settings → Google → Ads (reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalisation). On iPhone, Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. You can also visit Google Ad Settings.
How long we keep information
- On your device: until you delete it or uninstall Amali.
- Account and backed-up content: until you delete your account. We then delete it within 30 days, except what the law requires us to keep.
- Purchase records: for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
- Analytics and crash reports: for a limited period set in our analytics settings, and no longer than 14 months.
- Messages to us: for as long as needed to help you, then deleted.
- Ad data: held by Google under its own policy.
Your choices and rights
Whatever country you live in, you can control your information through your device settings, the in-app consent prompts and by deleting your account. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and get a copy;
- correct it, or delete it (account deletion is done in the app, see below);
- restrict or object to certain processing, and ask for it in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what happened before;
- complain to your data protection authority.
California: we do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are defined by California law, and we do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you. You may ask us what we hold, to correct it, or to delete it, and we will not treat you differently for doing so.
To use any of these rights other than account deletion, email hi@amali.app. We may need to confirm it is you, and we will reply as soon as we can and within 30 days.
Delete your account and data
You can delete your account and the data tied to it at any time, directly in the app. Open Amali, go to your account settings and choose Delete account. Deletion is done only in the app, so that only the person signed in to the account can request it. We do not process account deletion requests by email.
What is deleted: your account (email address and profile) and any content backed up to it, such as favourites, collections and reading sessions. What may be kept: purchase records that the law requires us to keep, and anonymous analytics that cannot be linked back to you.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Manage or cancel Amali Pro in the App Store or Google Play. If you never created an account, there is nothing to delete on our side: data kept on your device is removed when you uninstall Amali.
Security
We protect information with encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls on our systems and by relying on the security of our infrastructure providers. We also collect as little as we can, because data we never receive cannot be lost. No method is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your rights we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
Amali is made for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under the age set by local law for giving consent). If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact hi@amali.app and we will delete it.
International transfers
Our providers, including Google, process data in several countries, which may be different from where you live, including the United States. Where required, we rely on safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses and the providers’ data protection terms so that your information keeps an equivalent level of protection.
This website (amali.app)
The website has no accounts, forms or ads. What it does:
- Saved in your browser: your theme, language and a performance-mode flag, so the site looks the way you left it. These stay in your browser and are not sent to us.
- Analytics: on the live site we use Google’s analytics service to count visits and anonymous interactions (for example which section was viewed, how far you scrolled, or which store button was tapped). It loads after the page has finished loading. Google may set identifiers or cookies and process your IP address. To opt out, use your browser’s tracking protection or the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Store buttons: links to the App Store and Google Play carry a campaign label such as “hero” so we can see which button was used. It contains no personal information.
- Listening demo: when you use it, the recitation audio is fetched from a third-party audio provider, which receives your IP address like any web request.
- Hosting: the site is hosted by a third-party provider that keeps standard server logs. Fonts and icons are served from our own domain, not from third parties.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Amali grows or the law changes. We will change the “Last updated” date at the top, and for significant changes we will tell you in the app or on this page before they take effect. If a change needs your consent, we will ask for it.
